    • About NPI
    • CMS requires ALL health care providers who electronically transmit health information to have a unique provider number. This number is called a National Provider Identifier (NPI).   Providers may apply for their NPI now, but must start using the NPI no later than May 23, 2007.   After this date, the NPI is the only identification number a provider can use in all HIPAA standard transactions.
